Many of our animals come from high-kill shelters and other rescue situations. We find that fostering gives us the opportunity to assess the animal's personality and needs. This allows us to best match them with the right adoptive family. Also, we are able to provide all care and medical needs for our animals. It enables the animal to develop a happy frame of mind before adoption. We have many wonderful animals looking for a forever home.

When we work at a pace where the dogs are comfortable, the results are better and longer lasting. Also, not all personalities are meant to live successfully together. If there is more than one resident dog in the home, take the time to do a separate introduction as outlined above with each individual dog, both on neutral ground and in the house. Slowly bring them together starting with the most easy-going of the existing family. Keep in mind that the animal shelter is an unnatural environment. The shelter dog most likely has some level of stress and a family dog coming to the shelter may experience stress.

Meet Your New Best Friend
To improve the quality of life of homeless animals through veterinary care, foster care, humane education, and spay/neuter programs. The Humane Society of Charlotte believes in working to improve our community by creating new, loving families, and building a world where there are no more homeless and unwanted animals. This is an ongoing process — for every animal we can connect with a new family, another animal in need comes to HSC’s shelter. As a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the HSC relies on the generous support of animal lovers, grants, bequests, and fees for service.

We are out in the community helping bring awareness to Black Dog Syndrome.

Thank you for choosing to open your home to one of our adoptable animals! Bringing a new animal into your home is an exciting opportunity for you, your family, and the pet you choose. Please review our adoption philosophy and resources to ensure you are prepared to begin the search and ultimately bring your new pet home. Black Dog Syndrome describes the difficulty black dogs face in shelters. Compared to lighter-colored animals, they are significantly less likely to be adopted and more likely to be euthanized as a result.
If everything goes well, no barking, snapping, pulling, or other tense behavior; proceed with allowing the dogs to meet. We can facilitate a more correct greeting by encouraging them to walk circles with each other or even just slowly decreasing the distance while walking parallel. It can be VERY helpful to have another person present to simply observe the body language between the dogs, especially if either handler is unsure what to look for. There are several important steps to successfully and safely introduce a new dog into the household. First, it is important to take into consideration the personality of the dog already in the home.

All funds raised for the Humane Society of Charlotte directly support the animals in our care. Help support homeless animals and leave a lasting legacy at the new Animal Resource Center. (WBTV) - A neighbor said dozens of law enforcement officers used his home and backyard in a shootout that happened Monday afternoon in an east Charlotte neighborhood.
Or, if one dog becomes overbearing or ignores correction from the other. Then we can step in and calm the situation or remove the offender for a few moments. Otherwise just step back and give gentle verbal praise for appropriate and social play.
If you or your new pet are having troubling adjusting to the change, please reach out. You can call our shelter’s main line or email our onsite behavior team at Monetary donations of any size are beneficial and welcome. GCSPCA is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
We provide them with medical attention, rehabilitate them physically and emotionally, and care for them in foster homes until they can be placed in loving permanent homes. We assist dogs in distress without regard to age, breed or ease of placement. A lot of our adoptable pets have no background history, and no notes based on behavior around dogs, cats, kids, or house training. However, a lot of our volunteers know a little more about our dogs based on the walks they provide, and our fosters have the most knowledge about the dogs in their care. If you need assistance with finding the best match for you, your family, and lifestyle fill out our adopter profile form.
